Frank Frazetta was the undisputed master of Fantasy Art for 50 years, and has been called the 'Godfather of fantasy art'. His powerful paintings evoke a visceral reaction in all viewers. Since his death in 2010, his fame has only continued to grow. Frazetta's paintings depicting Tarzan, Conan, Vampirella, among many others, and his famous Death Dealer from 1973, depict fictional worlds and the characters that inhabit them: muscular, carnal and sensual.
He was drawing regularly at age two, entered the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts at age eight, and started his comic book career at the age of 16. Frazetta also produced paintings for mass market paperback editions of adventure books. His interpretation of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian visually redefined the genre of sword and sorcery, and had an enormous influence on succeeding generations of artists. Many other artists interpreted characters such as this before him, but as he explained in the 1970s: "I think very physically. In Brooklyn, I met Conan, I knew guys like him."
Frazetta instinctively used his personal experience to create his characters and the rich universes that made him the master of fantasy and science fiction.
