“Comfy synth evokes emotion and individual exploration of the uncomplicated, which could or could not have actually been experienced by its creator. Playing early smartphone games and television might actually be true memories of childhood for some creators, yet the aesthetic for comfy synth leans more towards treehouses, fireplaces, and blanket fortresses. These things might also be a part of the creators memories, yet comfy synth as a romantic movement is a mix of actual memories as well as borrowed ones from a collective consciousness of an imagined simpler time.” - Jonathan Carbon, Invisible Oranges

With this definition in mind, I created Frog Concert in 2022. I was seeking to construct a musical world of anthropomorphic frogs and an amphibious mixed consort ensemble who performed interpretations of my most beloved childhood memories which are of learning to play the violin. I reworked versions of the actual music of my youth, to varying degrees, with imagined classical frog standards.

Inspired by conceptual artists who explore meta music such as The Caretaker, William Basinski and Gavin Bryars, I repurposed pedological violin etudes and canon classical music set within the sounds and songs of a fantasy bog church known as the Amphibious Atelier, all under the direction of Frog Maestro Max Grody. This not only indulged my childhood fantasies, but, as a violin teacher, I could offer an audio Easter egg hunt for my own students, to rediscover the music that we studied in a new context. With Max Grody actively engaging the audience in regards to this process, I hope this component will be entertaining to other listeners as well.

Frog Concert continues to expand into new musical and conceptual territories while remaining anchored to it’s original frog lore. “ -
